Mini Mozzarella Appetizers

I’ve moved my blog! For the updated Mini Caprese Salad Recipe, please visit my new blog atJan’s Food Steps“.

Minimum effort, maximum wow factor is how I’d describe these mini mozzarella appetizers. They look great and taste delicious but it takes almost no effort to put them together. Simply get all your ingredients ready, thread them through some skewers, and voilà, you’ve got some fancy looking appetizers ready for entertaining.

While the classic Caprese salad usually comes to mind when making a dish with mini mozzarella, you can also pair the cheese with cured meats such as prosciutto, or melon pieces for something sweet and savoury.

Ingredients for Caprese Salad (servings: see note below):

  • mini mozzarella (or bocconcini)
  • cherry or grape tomatoes
  • fresh basil
  • extra virgin olive oil for drizzling
  • sea salt + pepper

Ingredients for Mozzarella + Prosciutto Appetizer:

  • mini mozzarella (or bocconcini)
  • prosciutto, thinly sliced
  • fresh basil
  • sea salt + pepper

Instructions:

  1. For the Caprese Salad: Thread 1 mini mozzarella ball on a skewer, follow with a piece of basil leaf and lastly the cherry or grape tomato. Repeat with remaining ingredients and store the skewers in the fridge. When ready to serve, drizzle extra virgin olive oil onto the skewers and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  2. For the Mozzarella + Prosciutto Appetizer: Cut the prosciutto slices length wise. Roll up one piece of prosciutto, thread it onto a skewer and follow with a piece of basil leaf and a piece of mozzarella cheese. Repeat with remaining ingredients and store the skewers in the fridge. Season the cheese lightly with sea salt and pepper before serving.

Notes:

  1. Serving: I generally allow 2-3 pieces per person if serving this as an appetizer. This helps me determine how many mini mozzarella and other ingredients I need to buy.
  2. If you don’t have mini mozzarella ball or bocconcini, you can cut up pieces of fresh mozzarella and it’d taste just as delicious!
  3. Try making this with different cured meats such as salami or chorizo. For something sweet and savory, you can try making the mozzarella skewers with strawberries or melon pieces and use balsamic reduction instead of the olive oil.
